Sun Dog Setting

Rolling along the highway
late February afternoon
the Widow Wyile scans the sky
and verges for winter wonders

Up high she spies a glimmer
to one side of yellow ball sun
a godly arm’s length away
green   orange  violet
diaphanous cloud wisp spot
a thrill of colours shimmer
off to the right
                        for a stretch
until the road
        bends

that part of the sky
            disappears

but joy!
there is one to the left too
            slight sun dogs
            mirage    or not
they linger
                        radiant
    prismatic perplexity
  incited by cirrus presence
coming in   and out  of sight
as the kilometres pass
under the rolling winter tires
        nonetheless
fill the Widow Wyile
       with   de - light

Later
            as she turns
onto the old river road
on the north bank of the lovely Wolastoq
the sun ball glows orange
the trees stand tall
branches  twigs  and twiglets  black
catch  ing   and  flash  ing
the  o range  g low
into a dazzling sunset
rolling by the river show
that caps the drive
that sets the wind
down scene
from rainbow to evening
sparkle of promise
to peaceful
                 sinking
